ABOUT
Gustavo S. Luengo received his Ph.D. from the Physical Chemistry Department at the Complutense University, Madrid (SPAIN) in 1993, His industrial experience started as a lubricant researcher at REPSOL Oil Co. (Spain) followed by a postdoctoral academic position on Surfaces and Tribology Science with Professor Jacob Israelachvili at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara (USA) and later (1998) with Pr. Eric Perez at the Ecole Normale Superieure (ENS, Paris, France). In 2000 he went back to Industry joining L’OREAL Research (Paris, FRANCE) as lab manager of a Nanophysics and Electron Microscopy laboratory. He has been pioneer on the application of scanning probe and Surface Science techniques to the understanding of the properties (structure, adhesion, friction, etc.) of the cosmetic substrate (hair and skin), their transformation when treated with materials (polymers in particular) and eventually the links with eco-conception of materials and performance ( ingredient penetration, mechanical, sensorial perception, etc.).
Since 2012 he has been a Research Expert for L’OREAL in the areas of Surface Science, Polymer Physics, Physical Chemistry and Biophysics of hair and skin. As part of his missions, he initiates and scientifically manages research collaborative programs with universities worldwide in his areas of expertise. He has been an invited speaker at numerous international conferences, author of ~100 peer-reviewed publications, ~10 patents, and contributed to several edited textbooks.
He has also served as editorial board for journal Biotribology (ELSEVIER) and Cosmetics (MSCD)., Member of the Colloids and Surface Science (COLL) and Polymer engineering (PMSE) Division of the American Chemical Society( ACS), member of the AASS, member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Former President of the Polymer Division of the French Chemical Society (SCF) and the French Polymer Society (GFP), Member of the French Physical Society. Member of the French Cosmetic Society (FSC).
He has teaching experience and intervenes regularly in Academic institutions as, for example: Imperial College, London, the Organic and Mineral Chemistry school (ESCOM, Compiègne, France) or the Industrial and Process Chemistry school (ENSIC, Nancy, France). He participates since 2023 as member of the External Advisory Board of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Georgia Tech, Atlanta (USA) and becoming Affiliated in 2025, Always interested to bring closer Academy and Industry, he became official L’Oreal ambassador in 2024,
