Title:  Finite Element Mesh Partitioning Technique for Simulation of Twin-Screw Extrusion and Polymer Coextrusion

A new finite element algorithm for simulation of the flow in twin-screw extrusion and in multi-layer polymer coextrusion will be presented in this seminar. The main difficulty in simulation of twin-screw extrusion and multi-layer coextrusion is the transient nature of the flow domain.  In the past, finite element mesh was modified or regenerated after each simulation step as the shape of the flow domain changed during a simulation. Modification or regeneration of a finite element mesh after each simulation step is cumbersome and time consuming. Furthermore, the quality of the finite element mesh, and hence, the accuracy of the numerical predictions, also deteriorates as the mesh is modified or regenerated.

In the newly developed finite element algorithm, called mesh partitioning technique, a finite element mesh of tetrahedral elements is generated only once over the complete flow domain. This finite element mesh remains unaltered even though the shape of the flow domain does change after each simulation step. In the mesh partitioning technique, the tetrahedral finite elements which are intersected by screw surfaces in twin-screw extrusion (or by the interface between adjacent polymer layers in coextrusion) are partitioned into two tetrahedral, pyramidal, or prismatic finite elements. Thereby, the mesh partitioning technique eliminates the need for modification or regeneration of the finite element mesh as the flow boundaries change during a simulation.

He is also the President of Plastic Flow, LLC, which he founded in 2002 to market the polyXtrue software for design of polymer extrusion dies. Before joining Michigan Tech in 1994, Prof. Gupta worked as a Research Associate at Cornell Injection Molding Program and as a consultant for Moldflow. Prof. Gupta’s current research is focused on computer simulation and optimization of polymer extrusion and injection molding. Prof. Gupta is a fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE). He served on the Board of Directors of the Extrusion Division of SPE from 2006 to 2010 and on the Board of Directors of the Electrical and Electronic Division of SPE from 1998 to 2002.
