GT Team Awarded $50K for Innovative Pediatric Medical Device
Hub Hygiene, the overall winner in the Spring 2016 Capstone Design Expo, was awarded $50,000 in a competition for innovative medical device solutions that address significant unmet needs in pediatric health.
The "Make Your Medical Device Pitch for Kids!" competition was sponsored by the National Capital Consortium for Pediatric Device Innovation (NCC-PDI), an FDA-funded consortium led by Children's National and the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland. Four companies were awarded $50,000 each and two were awarded $25,000. The six winners were selected from a field of twelve finalists. A record 98 total submissions from five countries were received for the competition this year.
Hub Hygiene was composed of the interdisciplinary team of Mary Catherine Adams, MSE, Timothy Gassner, BME, Pranav Godbole, ME, You Keun Kim, BME, Bharathwaj Nanadagopal, BME, and Ruifu Shi, BME. Their project, sponsored by the Georgia Tech Research Institute, was a device that cleans a needle-less IV connector to reduce bloodstream infection rates.
