2006 SURF Program
The 2006 SURF program included 17 REU (SURF) students involved in research experience with faculty in Chemistry, BME,
PTFE, ME, and MSE. The SURF fellows, including four minority and three female students, were selected out of a pool of about
100 applicants. The overall group came from nine different institutions around the country including Morehouse College in Atlanta
(1), Rutgers (1), John Hopkins (1), University of Florida (2), Carnegie-Mellon (1), University of Michigan (1), Alfred University (1),
University of Tennessee (1) and Georgia Tech (8). The majors represented include MSE (11), BME (3), ME (1), and Ceramic Engineering (2). The average GPA of this class was 3.60.
Five REU (SURF) students participated in the international research experience program. Three spent a six-week period at one of
the following sites in East Asia: National Institute of Materials Science in Tsukuba or Nanyang Technological University in
Singapore. The program was expanded to Brazil this year and two participants spent a six-week period at the University of Campinas in Campinas, São Paulo.
