Rick Neu and Dave McDowell along with two former Ph.D. students (Mahesh Shenoy and Ali Gordon) were presented the 2006 ASME Orr Best Paper Award for the paper: "Thermomechanical Fatigue Behavior of a Directionally Solidified Ni-base Superalloy," Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, Vol. 127, July 2005, pp. 325-336. The award is sponsored by the Materials Division of ASME. The editors of the Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology identified the paper as the best fatigue and fracture paper to appear in the journal within the twelve-month period July 2005 through June 2006. Z. L. Wang has been elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . He is honored for seminal contributions to the discovery, synthesis, understanding and applications of novel one-dimensional nanomaterials. Jonathan Simons has been appointed CEO and President of the Prostate Cancer Foundation in Los Angeles , the world’s largest philanthropic source of support for prostate cancer research. Evelyn DeLiso joined our 2006-2007 External Advisory Board. Steve Johnson was promoted to Fellow of the American Society for Composites. (2006) Ken Gall’s new shape memory polymer based device for ACL reconstruction was selected as honorable mention in the Modern Marvels Invention competition on the History channel. Honorable mention implies a member of the top 100 inventions out of 4200 submissions. David McDowell was chosen as the 2005 Jack M. Ziegler (BME 1948) Outstanding Educator in the Woodruff School for his contributions to education and teaching. McDowell expressed his philosophy as being simple, but based on experience. Everyone has the seed to be world-class at something. Some realize this, and some don’t. Some believe it and some don’t. Some discover it and some don’t. This is a great mystery of being human. A place like Georgia Tech can liberate those dreams buried in imagination and can offer their transformation to reality. But it is hard work. It is up to the student to identify and pursue their strengths. In this, an educator can play a crucial role. Valeria Milam was named a Georgia Cancer Coalition Scholar. The Georgia Cancer Coalition established the Distinguished Cancer Clinicians and Scientists program with the goal to recruit leading and nationally renowned cancer clinicians and scientists who are engaged in the most promising areas of cancer research.
