In 1959 a young Assistant Professor arrived to teach and work in the Metallurgy Department of Georgia Tech from the campus of Notre Dame.  His specialty began with the standard metals of steel, aluminum and magnesium focusing on issues of corrosion and surface modification
but, as new materials were developed, it wasn’t long before he began working in biomaterials.
Dr. Robert F. Hochman moved quickly up the ranks of Georgia Tech professorship and in 1971 became the Associate Director of Metallurgy.  The MSE School Director in 1991, Dr. Stephen D. Antolovich, called Hochman the guiding force which initiated the graduate metallurgy program at Georgia Tech.  Throughout the years, Hochman won numerous awards including the 1991 Distinguished Professor Award for “sustained achievement in teaching, research and service.”
This award honors those faculty members whose work best represents a level of excellence that Georgia Tech faculty, and faculty anywhere at any institution should strive to reach:  Outstanding research that contributes to the advancement of science, outstanding teaching which leads to the advancement of future generations and a belief that all endeavors of research and teaching serve to better the world.
Dr. Hochman retired in 1992 but like many retired Georgia Tech
faculty, he remains in touch with the myriad of students, co-workers and peers he befriended during his tenure.
On Friday, May 2, in honor of Dr. Hochman and his 80th birthday, the School of Materials Science & Engineering will host an event that not only celebrates his service to students, research, and the School but educates and re-unites.
As is typical of this beloved professor, the idea for this event was simply to bring together alumni and share with them the cutting edge research being conducted by both alumni and current faculty. It was an opportunity those of us here at the School could not resist taking advantage of to recognize Dr. Hochman for his many accomplishments.
In addition to School Chair, Dr. Bob Snyder, providing an overview of MSE research activities, a number of alumni will be sharing their interesting tales of MSE, research and the detours that life so often brings to us.  Following the event, there will be a reception.
