Chekesha M. Liddell (pictured right) (B.S. 99, Ph.D. 03) received a Presidential Early Career
Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Selection for this award is based on the combination of innovative research at the frontiers of science and technology and community
service demonstrated through scientific leadership and community outreach.
- Kristin Brosnan (B.S. 99) received the Diamond Award presented by the American Ceramic
Society Basic Science Division for Best Paper at the 2006 MS&T Conference. Kristen recently completed her Ph.D. at Penn State University and is now working at GE Global Research in Niskayuna, NY.
- S. K. Sundaram (Ph.D. 94) has been elected Fellow of the American Ceramic Society.
- Yancy W. Riddle (M.S. 98, Ph.D. 01) was promoted to Chief Technology Office at UCT Coatings, Inc.
- Xudong Wang, Powering the Nanoworld (Technology Review, Published by MIT).
Ralph E. Napolitano was recently promoted to Associate
Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University. He is also Coordinator of the Solidification Science Group in the Ames Laboratory Materials and Engineering

- John Horton (Cere 1986) and his wife Rhonda Radabaugh
Horton announce the birth of their son Samuel David Horton on June 8, 2005. Samuel was a healthy 6 lb. 9 oz. John is employed as a management engineer for the West Penn Allegheny Health
system in Pittsburgh PA. His wife Rhonda is a Clinical Pharmacist at Allegheny General Hospital.
- Reza Abbaschian
has been appointed as Dean of the University of California Riverside’s Bourns College of Engineering
(BCOE). Dr. Abbaschian’s research concentration is in solidification and materials processing. He is Vice President of ASM International, the largest materials society in the U.S.
- John T. Duddy, Jr
. has been appointed Program Director for the GPS II-F Program at the Boeing Company. Duddy will provide overall program leadership and direction of the current fleet of operational GPS II and IIA spacecraft; the
development and delivery of the next-generation GPS control segment; and the development and production of GPS II-F space vehicles 1-12 and beyond.
- Efstahios I. Meletis
, METE 81, has been named as the new Director of the University of Texas at Arlington College of Engineering’s Materials Science and Engineering program. Meletis was formerly an endowed professor of the materials
science and engineering program at Louisiana State University. His research interests include an emphasis on nanomaterials and nanotechnology, surface modification, thin films, materials properties in micro/nanofabricated
components and devices and material-environment interactions.
- Ralph E. Napolitano
, METE 97, was promoted to Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University where he also serves as the Coordinator of the Solidification Science Group in the Ames Laboratory Materials
and Engineering Physics Program. Ralph and Dawn have three beautiful children.
- Florence L. Yarbrough, MSE 03, an ensign in the U.S. Navy, recently completed the basic surface warfare officers course at
the Surface Warfare Officers School Command in Newport, R.I.

- S. K. Sundaram
(Ph. D., 1994 and Chief Materials Scientist at PNNL) gave an invited talk entitled, “Femto/Attosecond Laser Pulses and Measurements for Materials Processing and Diagnostics,” at the 12th International Symposium on Laser
-Aided Plasma Diagnostics, Snowbird, UT, September 26-29, 2005. Dr. S. K. Sundaram presented a poster entitled, “High
-Level Waste Glass Melt Dynamics,” (coauthors: P. P. Woskov, and D. E. Daniel, Jr.) at 29th International Symposium on
the Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management, Materials Research Society, Ghent, Belgium, September 12-16, 2005.
He also toured the Research Centre of Julich (Germany). Dr. S. K. Sundaram received Siemens Foundation Award for
outstanding service as a competition judge for Materials Science at the Siemens Westinghouse Competition, October
2005. Dr. S.K. Sundaram has been invited to Princeton University as a visiting scholar, an honorary and non-financial
appointment, during the 2005 fall semester. Dr. Sundaram will be working with Dr. Nan Yao, Director of Imaging and Analysis Center, where a variety of materials and molecules are imaged using electron microscopy.
- Andrew Hunt was nominated for an appointment of Alumni Association Trustee.
- Harry E. Carpenter
, CerE’74, was hired as an instructor of history and humanities at Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton, North Carolina, in January. He lives in Conover, North Carolina.
- During the 2004 American Ceramic Society Awards ceremony, Evelyn DeLiso
(MS ’80) was initiated as fellow of the American Ceramic Society. Dr. DeLiso, currently a senior materials development engineer at Masco Corporation’s R&D
Center in Taylor, Michigan, has experienced a distinguished career in the field of ceramics. She has held positions at Alcoa
Technical Center, Rutgers University, and Corning Incorporated. While at Corning Inc., DeLiso worked in the Optical
Materials and Process Research Department focusing on processes for fabrication of optical waveguides prior to working at Corning’s Fontainebleau Research Center where she worked in Photonics Research.
- Nicholas E. Grynkewich Jr
., CerE’65, MS CerE’72, retired from Delta Air Lines as an International Captain in September 2002 after a 30-year career. Grynkewich was in command of the first international flight from Atlanta to Frankfurt, Germany,
when the skies reopened on September 13, 2001. Grynkewich is also a retired colonel from the U.S. Air Force after a
twenty-six-year career with active duty and reserve forces. He and his wife, Ray, live on St. Simons Island, Georgia, and are active in the Golden Isles GT Club. They have two grown children and one grandchild.
- John Koger
, ChE’63, M.S. Met’65, “a self-professed golf nut,” makes golf history as the first American to participate in the British Open as a walking scorer (see Tech Topics Fall 2004 for article).
- Mark Janney
, CerE’74, recently retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, after a nineteen-year tenure. Janney has taken a new position with Porvair Fuel Cell Technology in Hendersonville, North Carolina as
Senior Research Engineer.
- Connie Fassett Littell
, CerE’79, has been named worldwide project management profession leader for IBM. Littell lives in Cary, North Carolina with her husband, Brian, and two daughters, Tracy and Clarie.
- Blair Caplan Marks
, CerE’78, received the Leadership Award from Women in Aerospace in September, 2003. Marks is director for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co.’s C-5 Avionics Modernization Program in Marietta, Georgia.
- Paul Nemec
, CerE’81, has taken the job as a Systems Engineer with Veridian Engineering in Huntsville, Alabama, supporting the Army’s Comanche program. He is also a captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Nemec, his wife, Susan,
and children, Ashley, 18, and Ben, 16, live in Montgomery, Alabama.
- Yancy W. Riddle, Ph.D. MSE’00, joined the senior management team of Universal Chemical Technology Inc. He is
responsible for the technology, engineering, science, and R&D efforts for the company, its current subsidiaries, and its
future subsidiaries. UCT makes nickel-boron coatings with superior properties for a wide variety of metal alloys and polymers.
- Jill Tucker Whittington
, MatE’98, was promoted to Senior Metallurgist, Flat Rolled-Mill Products Division, Alcoa Inc., Texas.
- William Clyburn, Jr.
, CerE’89, and wife, Dionne, welcomed their second child, William III., on January 15, 2004. Baby William joins older sister Christin at the family’s home in Washington, D.C.
- Cheryl Lattimore Drury
, MatE’90, and Bill Drury, ChE’85, PhD’93, announce the birth of a daughter, Darcy Clark, on October 14, 2003. Darcy joins Matthew, 5; and Jack, 3; and Paige, 2; at the family’s home in Peachtree City, Georgia. Bill is the
president of Custom Molded Products Inc. in Tyrone, Georgia, and Cheryl is a full-time mother.

The College of Engineering 2004 Alumni/Alumnae Awards Ceremony was held on
November 5, 2004. The School of Materials Science and Engineering had three alumni recognized during the ceremony: two inductions into the Academy of Distinguished Engineering Alumni and one induction into the Council of
Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni.
The Academy of Distinguished Engineering Alumni recognizes alumni who have made significant contributions to
their profession, the Institute, or society at large. Individuals receiving this award are widely respected, recognized for their professional and personal success, and actively involved in
engineering or management. The MSE alumni inducted into the Academy for 2004 were:
