The Georgia Institute of Technology is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.
The School of Materials Science and Engineering offers a program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering
degree that is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012; (410) 347-7700.
The first two years in the program are devoted to establishing a sound foundation in mathematics, science and basic engineering.
The final two years deal with establishing the structure-processing-properties relationships for all the major classes of materials, i.e., metals, ceramics, and polymers. Several electives allow a
student to develop a concentration in a particular area of materials, such as electronic materials or composites. A sequence of two design courses in the senior year serves as a Capstone design
experience for the program.
The B.S. program in Materials Science and Engineering has a very favorable student/faculty ratio and most students have significant personal interaction with the faculty. Over half the undergraduates
serve as Undergraduate Research Assistants while pursuing their degrees, gaining valuable hands-on experience and earning spending money. Graduates find ready employment in high tech
industries such as aerospace, ground transportation and electronics, as well as with primary materials processors. They are also well prepared for graduate work should they choose to continue their education.
The School has active student chapters of the international professional societies ASM International, TMS/AIME, ACerS, and MRS. These groups provide services, such as tutoring to lower classmen,
and sponsor seminars and social events.
